Sirje is a circus artist made in Ylitornio based in Brussels. Her roots come from Northern Finland where she first began dancing at the age of three and later on circus came along. She graduated from SaSak Circus Artist Education in spring 2020 and after that she continued to deepen her circus studies in Brussels in ESAC "École supérieure des arts du cirque" from where she graduated in 2023.

 

With her main discipline hula hoops she has developed her own style of hooping where she combines object manipulation with dance and movement. Her work explores the deconstruction of feminine-coded aesthetics, questioning how grace, beauty, and delicacy are expected to appear on a female body in circus. She approaches her discipline with irony and provocation, searching for ways to challenge and reframe the gaze of the audience. “My hoop hits like a sledge hammer.”

 

Her most recent projects have included performing at Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth's Winter Circus, the GOP -variety show in Germany, various festivals in Europe and working with the Sisko Collective that she co-founded with her sisters.
